In the history of Indian freedom movement, if we are to choose the ideal revolutionaries among the dedicated revolutionaries of the country, we will see many names. Along with Ramprasad Bismal, Bhagat Singh, Chandrasekhar Azad will also be mentioned. Azad\’s birthday is on July 23. India\’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was convinced of Chandrasekhar Azad\’s passion for independence. He was known as a very beloved companion among all his revolutionary comrades. He was also an excellent shooter and tactician. He made a promise to himself that he would never fall into the hands of the British, which he kept till his death.
Learning to aim with Bhils
Chandrashekhar Azad Tiwari was born on 23 July 1906 in village Bhabhara in Alirajpur in Jhabua district of present day Madhya Pradesh. His father\’s name was Sitaram Tiwari. As a child, Chandrasekhar lived among the Bhils, where he learned to shoot arrows. Child Chandrasekhar was greatly influenced by his mother. She wanted Chandrasekhar to study Sanskrit in depth and for this Azad was sent to Kashi Vidya Peth in Benares.
Dialogue between Judge and Azad
But Azad\’s mind was full of patriotism from childhood. At the age of 15, he was arrested in the non-cooperation movement. His conversation with the judge in the court became very famous and from here Azad was added to his name. He met the revolutionaries in Banaras.
Contact with revolutionaries
In 1922, when Gandhiji announced the end of the Non-Cooperation Movement, Azad was among the disillusioned youth across the country. He had been in contact with the revolutionaries. In such a situation, he met Ram Prasad Bismal. And Azad joined his Hindustan Prajatantra Sangh. In the beginning, Singh started the work of robbing the rich people who oppressed the poor for disorderly needs, but he soon gave up on this work.
Azad did not leave the principles.
Azad was a stickler for principles, while robbing people of money, a woman in the village snatched a pistol from Azad, but Azad did not raise a hand against this woman. Bismal himself snatched the pistol from this woman and freed Azad as well. The party then changed its policy and made people aware of it by distributing pamphlets of the new policies, which spoke of liberation through armed revolution.
Respect for colleagues
Azad was held in high esteem among fellow revolutionaries. Even Bismal and Bhagat Singh held him in high esteem, working diligently to raise money for Azad Bismal\’s Hindu Socialist Republican Association. Seeing Azad\’s strong will and quick mind, Bismal named him Quicksilver.
Freed in the Kakuri and Lahaul scandals
The Kakuri Conspiracy was a major event in revolutionary history. After looting the treasure in the train, the police started arresting all the revolutionaries one by one, but Chandrasekhar Azad could not be caught. He was adept at changing abode. And it did not come into the hands of the British for a long time. Later, after the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, when Bhagat Singh decided to avenge the incident, Azad supported him and ensured that Bhagat Singh was not caught in the Saunders massacre in Lahore.
Azad\’s popularity was revealed after his death when Purushottam Das Tandon and Kamala Nehru also attended his funeral. A large number of local people also attended his last rites. While the rest of the revolutionaries were captured by the British because of their dignity, Azad was seen to be afraid of them. The British also uprooted the tree under the cover of which they fought the British for the last time.

On Saturday, the 116th anniversary of the popular revolutionary Chandrashekhar Azad\’s birth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to him. Such stalwarts, according to Modi who called him a \”wonderful son of Mother Bharati,\” are examples of bravery and patriotism. I bow to two greats sons of Maa Bharti, Lokmanya Tilak and Chandra Shekhar Azad on their birth anniversary. These two stalwarts epitomise courage and patriotism. Sharing what I had spoken about them during #MannKiBaat a few years ago. pic.twitter.com/GuhXVxWZfa
