15 August 1947, the most beautiful day in the history of India when India got independence from 200 years of British rule. In fact, these are the days that remind us of the sacrifices and repentance of our freedom fighters. On this day, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, hoisted the Indian national flag over the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi. Let us tell you that a lot happened on that day, which went down in the history books. First Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru\’s first speech delivered by him from the Viceroy Lodge (present President) Bhawan on the intervening night of 14-15 August.
Addressing the nation during his first speech, Nehru said that many years ago we tried to change destiny and now the time has come when we will be freed from our commitment. Not completely but it is important. At 12 o\’clock tonight when the whole world is sleeping, India will make a new beginning with a free life. Nehru\’s speech gave a new ray of hope to the people of India. Nehru\’s speech inspired courage even though the country was divided geographically and internally along communal lines.
On August 15, 1947, Bismillah Khan welcomed the first morning of independence by playing the shehnai. It is noteworthy that when India was about to become independent, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru wanted Bismillah Khan to be invited to Delhi on the occasion. According to historians, the then Joint Secretary Badruddin Taibji, who was looking after the arrangements for the Independence Day celebrations, was given the responsibility to find Khan Sahib and bring him to Delhi. Khan came to Delhi on Nehru\’s invitation. Bismillah Khan and his companions welcomed the first rays of the sun by playing raga. Pandit Nehru then unfurled the flag.
India is gearing up to celebrate its 75th Independence Day today. There is a festive atmosphere everywhere. In this modern era, everyone is preparing to celebrate in their own way. Every year thousands of people gather at the Red Fort to participate in the festivities. But exactly 75 years ago today, when India was still far from the age of modernity, thousands of people gathered at Delhi\’s Red Fort to join in the celebration.
