Alternate captain Jasprit Bamra beat the hapless Stuart Broad in 29 runs to set the world record for most runs in an over in Test cricket, beating the exploits of the great Brian Lara with one try. Lara beat South African left-hander Robin Peterson in 2003–04 to set a world record for 18 years by scoring 28 Test runs, which included four fours and two sixes in six legal innings.
Former Australian player George Bailey also scored 28 runs in this over, but he left Lara behind in points.
Broad, who hit six sixes in an over off Yuvraj Singh in the inaugural T20 World Championship in 2007, smashed 35 runs in the 84th over of the first Indian innings in the rescheduled fifth Test here. There were six extra runs – five shots and no balls.
The Indian captain missed 31 off 16 balls with the help of four fours and two sixes.
It all started with a mistimed hook that went over the boundary and in desperation, Brode took off a bouncer that went into five hits.
The next ball was again shorted, and another top end conceded seven runs including a no ball to Bumrah.
The next three balls hit the boundary in different directions – one from mid, one from light foot and one from the middle of the last wicket.
To add insult to injury, Bamra played the infamous “buzzball” (current buzz in English cricket which emphasizes the attacking intent shown by new coach Brendon McCullum) with six deep mid-wicket.
India finished their first innings with a score of 416 ahead of centuries from Rishabh Pant (146) and Ravindra Jadeja (104).
