Story
World Lion Day was first celebrated in 2013. It was led by Derek and Beverly Joubert, a wild cat couple. Realizing that the lion population was declining, Joubert turned to National Geographic for help with the brand. The couple started an initiative called Big Cat Initiative (BCI) in 2009.
