The United States has long been ranked among the most innovative countries in the world. Innovations in fields ranging from software development and finance to energy storage and biotechnology can have a profound impact on our daily lives.
Not only is innovation a key driver of economic growth, some innovations, such as the COVID-19 vaccine, have saved countless lives. Meanwhile, others, such as the ongoing development of lithium-ion batteries, may prove key to reducing global carbon emissions.
America\’s status as a global center of innovation is partly due to government funding for research and development. In 2020 alone, the federal government spent approximately $138 billion on research and development. From Fortune 500 companies to small start-ups, the private sector is also a driver of innovation. For example, Amazon will spend more than $62 billion on research and development in fiscal year 2022. (Here\’s a look at the most innovative companies in 2021.)
Several leading indicators show that much of the innovation happening in the US is concentrated in certain parts of the country. Using an innovation index created by personal finance website WalletHub in its report on the most and least innovative states, 24/7 Wall St. Listed 50 states in order from least innovative to most innovative. The WalletHub index ranks states based on a variety of indicators of innovation including patents issued, venture capital funding, entrepreneurship and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) employment. We collected some data such as STEM employment, venture capital investments, and patents issued from a variety of sources.
Many of the most innovative states are coastal, located on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. These locations often have high concentrations of large research universities, as well as large employers in industries ranging from defense to information technology. (Here are 30 inventions that influenced military history.)
Jobs in STEM fields in these states pay more than STEM jobs in states that rank lower on this list. For example, the five least innovative states each have an average annual STEM salary of less than $85,000, and the five most innovative states each have an average STEM salary of more than $100,000.
