World Senior Citizens Day: History

As noted by the United Nations (UN), the elderly population is projected to reach over 1.5 billion people by 2050. This increase will be noticeable in East and Southeast Asia. By 2050, more than two-thirds of the world\’s senior people will live in less developed countries. Given the growth of the elderly population, it is important that a robust system is in place to support their overall well-being.

Many senior people report abuse from their children. Many others suffer from neglect. Many people consider their elderly parents a burden. Some leave them in nursing homes or cause damage to their property. Such crimes should be put to an end. World Senior Citizens Day is an important event that helps us identify and address these issues for social healing.
